Conformation and displacement in muscle contraction.

Some salient facts about muscle contraction are sketched in Fig. 1. When a sarcomere contracts, actin filaments move inward relative to myosin filaments, and the filaments separate in the transverse plane. If at any stage the length is clamped, and the static tension developed against the stops is tested, it is found that the tension as well as the ATPase hydrolysis increases linearly with the ...

EARDRUM DISPLACEMENT FOLLOWING STAPEDIUS MUSCLE CONTRACTION by

Simultaneous monitoring in human subjects on the same ear of eardrum displacement by tympanomanometry, and acoustical impedance by the Madsen bridge, provided information concerning contraction of the stapedius muscle and its effect on eardrum displacement. Extensive control procedures were employed to elicit only the stapedius reflex: lower intensity auditory stimulation, electrocutaneous stim...

Contraction-driven cell motility.

We propose a mechanism for the initiation of cell motility that is based on myosin-induced contraction and does not require actin polymerization. The translocation of a cell is induced by symmetry breaking of the motor-driven flow, and the ensuing asymmetry gives rise to a steady motion of the center of mass of a cell. The predictions of the model are consistent with observations on keratocytes.

Software for determining the true displacement of faults

One of the most important parameters of faults is the true (or net) displacement, which is measured by restoring two originally adjacent points, called “piercing points”, to their original positions. This measurement is not typically applicable because it is rare to observe piercing points in natural outcrops. Much more common is the measurement of the apparent displacement of a marker. Methods...

Thrust faults and the global contraction of Mercury

[1] Lobate scarps on Mercury are the surface expression of thrust faults and are generally thought to be the result of global contraction. Our analysis indicates that these thrust faults are not uniformly distributed and exhibit non-random patterns on the imaged hemisphere. The greatest area normalized cumulative length of the faults occurs in the southern hemisphere, below 50 S. The thrust fau...
